What a loaf costs

Flour makes up most of the ingredient cost. Specialist flours, seeds and enriched doughs with butter and milk cost more. Energy for baking isn't included — add an estimate under "Other costs" if you want it counted.

Frequently asked questions

Is homemade bread cheaper than shop-bought?

Sometimes. A basic loaf's ingredients can be cheap, but oven or bread-machine energy adds to the cost. Compare your result with the loaf you'd usually buy.

How do I calculate baking costs?

Cost each ingredient by the amount used, add any packaging or decoration, then divide by the number of cakes or portions. Try the baking cost calculator.

Does the calculator account for the amount of an ingredient actually used?

Yes. Choose 'Pack price' and enter the pack size, pack price and amount used — the calculator only charges for what goes into the recipe.

Can I use different currencies?

Yes. Choose GBP, USD, EUR, CAD or AUD from the currency menu. This only changes the symbol — we don't convert prices, as you enter your own.
